What Makes an NFL Player Truly Elite?
My Doctoral Dissertation – Part 3

Every athlete wants to know the secret: What separates the best from the rest?
Why do some players make it to the NFL while others fall short? And among those who do make it, why do only a small percentage become starters, Pro Bowlers, and Super Bowl champions?
After studying elite NFL players for my dissertation, I found that the answer isn’t just about talent. Every player at that level has physical ability. They all lift, run, and practice at the highest level. But only a few rise above the pack.
So, what makes an NFL player truly elite?
It comes down to four key factors: mindset, preparation, adaptability, and resilience. These are the things that separate great athletes from everyone else.
1. The Mindset: Belief, Confidence, and Ruthless Execution
When I talked to elite NFL players about what goes through their minds on game day, I noticed a pattern: They don’t hope to play well—they expect it.
Elite players don’t wonder if they belong at the highest level. They believe it. They don’t hope to make plays—they assume they will. This mindset isn’t arrogance; it’s a product of years of preparation and self-trust.
The difference between good and elite athletes is confidence in execution.
Good players have the physical tools but hesitate in critical moments. They second-guess themselves, worry about making mistakes, or let doubt creep in. Elite players? They move with zero hesitation because they’ve trained their minds just as much as their bodies.
How to develop the elite mindset:
- Train with intention. Every rep in practice is an opportunity to refine execution.
- Develop a pre-play routine that locks you in mentally. Use self-talk to stay focused.
- Eliminate hesitation. When you step on the field, trust your preparation.
Elite athletes don’t wait for success to happen—they command it through mindset and execution.
2. Preparation: Every Detail Matters
When I asked elite NFL players about their habits, one thing stood out: they prepare differently.
They don’t just show up to practice and go through the motions. They attack every aspect of their craft. They study film relentlessly. They take care of their bodies. They maximize recovery. They control everything they can so that nothing is left to chance on game day.
Great players do what’s required. Elite players do what’s necessary.
What does that look like?
- Film Study: Elite players study their opponents so well that they anticipate moves before they happen. They don’t just watch film—they analyze tendencies and look for weaknesses.
- Body Maintenance: They treat their bodies like high-performance machines. Nutrition, hydration, sleep, and recovery are just as important as lifting and running.
- Game Simulation: They mentally and physically simulate game scenarios so that pressure situations feel automatic.
Elite performance isn’t just about what happens on the field—it’s a product of preparation behind the scenes.
3. Adaptability: The Best Players Adjust Instantly
Football is unpredictable. A game plan is only useful until the first snap. Then, it’s about how fast you can adjust.
Elite players have the ability to process information and adapt in real time. If a defense shows a new look, they recognize it and adjust. If an opponent tries to take away their strength, they have a counter ready.
Adaptability is what allows elite players to perform at a high level—no matter the circumstances.
Players who struggle often do so because they get flustered when things don’t go according to plan. They expect everything to go a certain way, and when it doesn’t, they freeze. Elite athletes? They stay calm, collected, and ready to pivot.
How to build adaptability:
- Be curious—learn the game at a deeper level so you can anticipate adjustments.
- Practice chaos drills—simulate game scenarios that force quick decision-making.
- Develop emotional control—learn how to stay composed under pressure.
Elite players don’t just execute—they problem-solve in real time.
4. Resilience: The Ability to Bounce Back
Every player faces adversity. Injuries, bad games, tough losses, getting benched—it happens to everyone. But what happens next is what separates elite players from the rest.
Elite players don’t let failure define them. They use it as fuel.
They don’t dwell on mistakes. They don’t make excuses. They analyze what went wrong, make the necessary adjustments, and come back stronger.
The best players in the NFL have all had moments where things didn’t go their way. But instead of letting failure shake their confidence, they used it to elevate their game.
How to build resilience:
- Learn to embrace failure—see it as an opportunity to improve.
- Develop a short memory—bounce back quickly from mistakes.
- Keep a growth mindset—believe that setbacks are part of the process.
The Formula for Elite Performance
Being elite isn’t about talent alone. It’s about a combination of mindset, preparation, adaptability, and resilience.
Here’s how you can apply these principles to your own training and competition:
- Master Your Mindset – Train with confidence. Believe in your ability to execute at a high level.
- Prepare Like a Pro – Pay attention to the details. Study film, take care of your body, and treat every rep like it matters.
- Become Adaptable – Learn the game at a deeper level. Be ready to adjust to any situation.
- Develop Resilience – Bounce back from setbacks. Keep improving, no matter what obstacles come your way.
The best part? These traits aren’t just for NFL stars. They can be developed at any level. Whether you’re in high school, college, or training for the next step, these habits will set you apart.
