The Transfer Portal Isn’t the Problem: How to Make Better Decisions in a Fast-Moving System

The transfer portal gets blamed for a lot of what feels broken in college sports. It’s easy to point at movement and say the system is unstable. In reality, the portal is just a tool. Like any tool, it can be used wisely or poorly. The outcome depends on the person holding it.
Every major decision carries weight. Where you train, who you learn from, and the environment you grow in will shape more than your performance. These choices influence habits, confidence, and direction. The speed of today’s system makes it tempting to react instead of reflect.
I’ve seen athletes make great moves that unlocked growth. I’ve also seen athletes move quickly in moments of frustration, only to discover the same challenges waiting for them in a new place. Changing environments doesn’t automatically change patterns.
The most important question isn’t, “Can I leave?” It’s, “Why am I leaving?” Are you running from discomfort, or are you moving toward development? Growth often feels uncomfortable. It asks you to stay present, communicate, and work through adversity. Escape is easier than engagement, but it rarely builds the skills that last.
Good decisions come from clarity. Clarity comes from honest self-assessment. What do you need right now? More structure? More opportunity? Better alignment with your values? The answers to those questions matter more than the speed of the process.
Parents and coaches can help by slowing the moment down. Encourage questions. Encourage conversations. Encourage athletes to seek perspective from people who aren’t emotionally invested in the outcome. Big decisions deserve calm thinking.
The portal doesn’t remove responsibility. It increases it. With more freedom comes a greater need for maturity. Every move teaches something. The goal is to make choices that teach strength, not shortcuts.
Opportunity as a collegiate athlete can be powerful and when used well, it becomes a platform for growth. Used impulsively, it becomes a cycle. The system isn’t broken. It’s simply asking more of the people inside it.
Choose with intention. Let your decisions reflect who you are becoming, not just what you are feeling in the moment.
