Keeping Up Momentum After Getting Fired: The Key to Moving Forward

MARCH 2025

Getting fired is one of the toughest experiences anyone can go through, especially in the coaching profession, where jobs are often tied to wins, losses, and factors beyond your control. It’s easy to feel embarrassed, frustrated, or even paralyzed by the uncertainty of what’s next. But one thing is certain—going into hiding is the worst thing you can do. Keeping up your momentum isn’t just about finding your next job; it’s about staying visible, staying connected, and making sure that when the right opportunity comes, you’re ready for it.

One of the biggest mistakes I see coaches make after getting fired is retreating from the business altogether. They stop showing up, stop networking, and let pride or shame keep them from reaching out. If that’s you, stop now. The reality is, you are not the first coach to be fired, and you won’t be the last. This profession is full of ups and downs, and the best way to get back on your feet is to stay in the game—even when you’re temporarily on the sidelines.

I had a colleague recently reach out to me after getting let go. His message was simple: “Don’t let me go into the darkness.” He knew how easy it would be to disappear, to let the disappointment sink in, and to feel like no one was paying attention. But the problem is, now he’s unresponsive. That moment of clarity, where he recognized the danger of isolation, has faded—and that’s exactly what you cannot allow to happen to yourself.

Instead of disappearing, get proactive. Pick up the phone. Send texts. Get on the road and visit people. The coaching profession is built on relationships, and now is the time to lean on them. If you haven’t updated your LinkedIn or turned on your availability on job-seeking platforms, do it today. Coaches, administrators, and decision-makers won’t come looking for you if they don’t know you’re looking.

And here’s something that may be tough to hear: Pride, ego, and shame have no place in your job search. Being fired does not define your career, but how you handle it absolutely will. The ones who bounce back the fastest are the ones who refuse to let a setback turn into a downward spiral. It’s about action—networking, learning, improving, and positioning yourself for the next opportunity.

That’s why I’m launching a Free Agent Coaching List. If you’re looking for a job, you can fill out a form, and I’ll post your name on my Instagram stories each week. This is NOT an endorsement of any individual—it’s simply a way to provide free networking to fellow coaches. Plenty of people charge for services like this, but if I can help a coach get back on their feet and into the profession again, then mission accomplished.

Coaching is a business, but it’s also a community. If you’re in the job market, don’t let yourself go into the darkness. Stay visible, stay connected, and take control of what’s next. Fill out the Free Agent Coaching List, reach out to your network, and keep moving forward. The next opportunity is out there—make sure you’re ready for it.
