Foundations of Sport Performance – A Decade of Coaching Coaches

MARCH 2025
When Dr. Rick McGuire set out to create an online master’s degree program focused on positive coaching, he knew he was addressing a vital need for coaches, teachers, and lifelong learners who juggle busy schedules yet yearn to further their education. His vision took shape over ten years ago, and I’ve had the privilege of being part of it almost from the start. As an adjunct professor since 2012, I’ve been teaching a course called Foundations of Sport Performance, where I’ve had the opportunity to guide hundreds of students through the nuances of coaching philosophies, speed, agility, strength, conditioning, and nutrition.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this class is witnessing how participants apply these principles in real time. By the end of the course, every student creates a comprehensive four-week program tailored to a specific sport. It’s more than a simple exercise; it’s a testament to their learning and dedication. Whether it’s developing an off-season strength plan for a high school soccer team or crafting a nutrition-centric blueprint for basketball athletes, these final projects serve as proof that the students are ready to integrate what they’ve learned into practical settings.
Over the years, I’ve encountered students from all walks of life. Yes, there have been Division I strength coaches aiming to sharpen their skills for football or basketball programs, but I’ve also met entrepreneurs, educators, and even non-athletics professionals who are simply passionate about self-improvement. This diversity not only enriches the discussions we have but also highlights the universal appeal of understanding optimal sport performance—everyone can benefit from learning about teamwork, physical development, and mental resilience.
The real magic, however, comes from the connections made in the process. Whenever I get to meet or talk with the people in my class, I’m reminded that education is less about information and more about transformation. Students share stories of success and struggle, swap ideas on leadership and mentorship, and challenge me to think differently about coaching. They bring a growth mindset to every conversation, fueling a classroom environment that constantly pushes the boundaries of conventional thinking.
It’s that spirit of curiosity and drive for excellence that keeps me excited about the program’s future. I often think about creating an “Advanced Methods of Sport Performance” course—something that delves deeper into cutting-edge techniques, technology, and strategies. Even after all these years in the coaching realm, I still see myself as a lifelong learner eager to explore new methods and question the status quo alongside my students.
The Foundations of Sport Performance class is part of the Positive Coaching and Athletic Leadership master’s program at the University of Missouri—an online program born out of Dr. McGuire’s passion for coaching and his commitment to mentor those who mentor others. Like him, I value the precious resource of time, and this degree offers flexibility to busy professionals without sacrificing depth or quality. Not to mention the program is in the hands of an extremely qualified and capable Director, Dr. Greg Sullivan.
If you or someone you know has been thinking about furthering your education—whether to enhance your coaching career, transition into athletic administration, or simply fuel your passion for learning—I encourage you to explore this program. Having spent nearly a decade teaching in it, I can attest that it’s a place where both academic rigor and practical application thrive. So why not take the next step? Sometimes, all it takes is that first leap of faith to discover just how transformative continuing education can be.
