Facing the Enrollment Cliff: A Call for Visionary Leadership in Higher Education and Athletics

DECEMBER 2025
There’s a challenge looming over higher education that no athletic department, university, or conference can afford to ignore: the enrollment cliff. For years, data has been pointing to the steady decline in the number of college-age students across the United States. Now that projection is becoming reality, and it is reshaping how universities operate, plan, and sustain themselves.
The impact goes far beyond classrooms and lecture halls. As university enrollment drops, so does tuition revenue, the lifeblood of most institutions. That strain inevitably reaches athletics. Whether directly through reduced budgets or indirectly through cuts to the programs and infrastructure that support athletes, the ripple effect is real. Athletics has always leaned on the stability of the larger university, but as that foundation becomes less certain, both sides must adapt.
This is not an issue we can afford to wish away or outwork in the short term. The enrollment cliff will not reverse itself through hope or tradition. It will require bold, forward-thinking leadership that recognizes how tightly linked the health of athletics is to the health of the university as a whole. Ignoring the signs or simply maintaining the status quo will not be enough.
For university leaders, the task ahead is monumental. It will mean rethinking recruitment strategies, expanding non-traditional pathways, and finding new ways to engage adult learners, online students, and underserved populations. It will mean making tough decisions about programs, staffing, and how to deliver education in ways that meet modern needs. But just as important, it will require communicating those changes clearly and inspiring the campus community to rally around a shared mission.
For athletic administrators, the responsibility is no less significant. We cannot assume that athletics will remain insulated from the broader institutional challenges. Instead, this is the time to be proactive partners in solving them. Athletics departments can play a key role in shaping the university brand, attracting students, and creating a sense of community that supports recruitment and retention. But that requires transparency, collaboration, and alignment with the institution’s overall strategy.
Athletics has always been one of the most visible parts of a university. When managed effectively, it can also be one of the most unifying. Successful programs not only generate revenue but also drive engagement among alumni, prospective students, and the local community. At a time when every enrollment and every donor matters, that kind of connection can make a real difference.
Still, we must acknowledge that budgets will tighten and expectations will shift. Departments will need to find efficiencies, share resources, and make decisions rooted in sustainability. This is where leadership becomes crucial. The best leaders will be the ones who can look beyond their own departments, build coalitions, and help their institutions navigate this era of change with creativity and accountability.
The enrollment cliff is not just a numbers problem. It is a leadership test. It will separate those who react from those who plan, those who protect the past from those who prepare for the future. Visionary leaders will see opportunity in this moment to redesign systems, build partnerships, and reimagine what higher education and athletics can look like when aligned toward a common goal.
This is not the time to put our heads in the sand and hope the storm passes. It’s the time to face it head-on, together. Universities and athletic departments that embrace change, communicate openly, and lead with purpose will not only survive the enrollment cliff but come out stronger on the other side.
