OCTOBER, 2024

In today’s rapidly evolving world, community mental health has never been more critical. It’s about more than just providing support—it’s about being a pillar of strength and hope for individuals and families navigating complex behavioral and mental health challenges. One organization at the forefront of this mission is Seven Counties Services, Kentucky’s leading Community Mental Health Center.

With a presence in seven counties, including Jefferson, Oldham, Bullitt, Shelby, Spencer, Trimble, and Henry, Seven Counties Services offers a comprehensive range of mental health, behavioral health, and substance use treatment services. For over four decades, they have been recognized for their commitment to providing compassionate, individualized care that meets the diverse needs of the communities they serve. Their work is fully accredited by The Joint Commission, a testament to their effectiveness and dedication to quality care.

Given their reputation and impact, I was deeply honored to receive the Behavioral Health Champion Award from Seven Counties Services. This award holds special meaning to me as it recognizes not only my professional contributions but also my personal dedication to enhancing mental health awareness in marginalized communities. My involvement in coordinating a BIPOC Mental Health Festival to uplift mental health for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities was a labor of love, aimed at creating an environment for conversations and support that often go unaddressed.

The festival was about more than just raising awareness—it was about fostering a sense of community, breaking down stigmas, and ensuring that individuals feel seen and supported in their mental health journey. Working alongside Seven Counties Services, who share a deep commitment to equity and resilience, made this initiative even more impactful. Their mission aligns perfectly with the goals of the festival: to build upon the strengths of the individuals we serve and better our communities through innovative, compassionate care.

Seven Counties Services’ holistic approach to community mental health is underpinned by four core values: Compassion, Intentionality, Resilience, and Equity. These values are not just words; they are woven into the fabric of their work. Whether it’s through their services for children with emotional and behavioral disorders, support for individuals with intellectual disabilities, or treatment for those grappling with substance use disorders, Seven Counties strives to make a lasting difference.

What sets them apart is their relentless focus on advocacy and their dedication to addressing social inequalities that create barriers to care. They recognize that true healing requires more than just treating symptoms—it involves addressing the root causes and systemic challenges that impact mental health outcomes. Their vision is bold and inspiring: to improve the lives of individuals and families by building healthier, stronger communities.

Receiving the Behavioral Health Champion Award is not just a personal achievement—it’s a reminder of the ongoing need to advocate for mental health, especially within marginalized groups. It’s a call to continue the work, to push for greater accessibility, and to ensure that every person, regardless of their background, has access to the mental health resources they deserve.

Looking ahead, I’m excited to see how our collaboration can further this mission. Together, we can continue to break down stigmas, promote equity, and empower our communities. Because when we support the mental and behavioral health of our neighbors, we build a foundation for a healthier, more vibrant future for everyone.
