An Introduction: The Pilot Episode
Show Highlights
Growing up a momma’s boy in Detroit came with its own set of challenges, so Pat’s mom, Alma, took him to the football field to toughen him up. Not only did it do that, but it also raised his confidence and Pat enjoyed the physicality and learned the value of teamwork. Thus began his lifelong love affair with the sport.
The ups and downs, and overall successes of his playing career would leave anyone with a feeling of accomplishment, but Pat didn’t stop there. He began as a graduate assistant strength coach, taking on whatever roles and responsibilities that would help him be a coach and worked his way up to director. From 2004 to 2015 Pat grew the department from 6 staff members to over 30 and increased the department budget more than 5x – from $329,000 to $1,900,000. By no means was it a solo effort, MANY hands and great minds played a role in helping improve services for athletes!
When asked for one or two things to sustain a career in the performance field, Pat responded with work-life integration as opposed to work-life balance and keep finding ways to grow! Both of these will extend your life, passion, and relevance in the field and better prepare you for what’s down the road.
Beyond Sets and Reps will, in fact, discuss sets and reps, but we will go even further to explore the challenges faced by coaches, athletes, and performance professionals. We will hear how others navigate those challenges and ultimately increase their awareness and knowledge for better performance. If you’re a lifelong learner looking to continue improving, subscribe to discover new ways to maximize your performance.
